Bahamasair – NAS – GHB Roundtrip

Flight Review

When most people think of the Bahamas, they think of Nassau and its Atlantis Resort or Cable Beach.  Or, they might think of their cruise ship docking at Freeport for a shopping excursion.  Those are great destinations and I’ve done them a few times, albeit twenty years ago when Atlantis was simply Paradise Island.

However, if you want to try something a little simpler and less built up, Eleuthera could be the island for you.  After getting to Nassau on Delta Airlines, we got to connect to Bahamasair for our trip to Governor’s Harbor (GHB) in the middle of Eleuthera.

Upon arrival in Nassau, we came out to their relatively simple arrivals hall.  They actually have a new international arrivals hall under construction with a target of Fall of 2012 for completion.  After claiming our luggage, we checked in for our flight to GHB with a brief stop in North Eleuthera.

The aircraft was a De Havilland Dash 8 turboprop with seating for around 50 people.  The service from Bahamasair was efficient and courteous.  They did not charge us any extra charge for checked baggage even though we had several pieces including a couple of coolers with our meat for the week.  After a quick stop in North Eleuthera, we got into GHB a little ahead of schedule.

On the flight back to Nassau, all was well and we got to experience the new international departures terminal that opened up on March 2011.  A big improvement over the old one, this offered several shopping choices, restaurants and even a shared airline lounge.

Points and Dollars

My roundtrip ticket to GHB was $140.  I charged it to my DL Platinum AMEX, so I will earn 280 DL Skymiles.  Also, Bahamasair is a partner with US Airways, so I gave them my Dividend Miles number.  However, I just discovered that not all fares are eligible for US Air credit.  So, I will need to contact Bahamasair and see if I can get credit to my newly opened FF# with them.
